Ice and relativity

Monday

Monday: Limi Feu sweater, Under Armour long sleeve, Rachel Comey pants. I drove home early from work because a nasty ice storm hit that late afternoon/evening. Look at the nice natural lighting in this photo! I also moved where I was so I wasn’t against the dark curtains. I do have on my workout leggings underneath the RC pants. It was one of those days where wearing my workout clothes under my regular clothes helps me get down to the cold basement to work out. Wednesday

Wednesday: Banana Republic sweater, Everlane pants. I skipped Tuesday’s photo because I was in a very bad state. My boss gave me a project to work on… that’s actually more like a department position transitional move… It depends on how well this goes plus several other factors in play. I think he’s pushing me to join the Business Development team, but I’m not sure yet. Either way, this new project has me working with clients more and I honestly feel like I’m being thrown in the deep end of the pool and told to swim. He’s also not that great at give direct orders, which is what I need. He’s more of a casual conversationalist and then assumes you’ll know what to do. Nope. Not me. Not at all. So I didn’t get the work done he told me to because 1 – I had no clue on how to do it and 2 – I wasn’t entirely clear on what his directive was for me. At the end of the day he and I sort of “argued” (more like confused banter about who said what and who assumed what) about it and I went home feeling like I’d failed at some BIG but I couldn’t tell what because I had no clue. Just before I left work several other coworkers and mangers assured me it wasn’t me. Not entirely anyway. Wednesday, we met up and I learned how to assert myself with him and stop him in his tracks when I needed a clearer explanation on things. I’m a very linear person when it comes to what I need to know and how I need to know it. He’s the exact opposite, but because he’s the one showing me this new stuff I had to put my foot down and stop him before he veered too far off track. I also scheduled lots of little tutorials throughout the day with people more knowledgable about the software I’d be using for this work. So Wednesday was super busy, but much better.

Thursday

Thursday (today): Everlane sweater, Rachel Comey pants. Today felt downright warm compared to what it’s been over the past several weeks. That’s really sad considering it was only in the 40s. Tomorrow will be a heat wave in the 60s!

Since working on this new project at work I’ve had my head a-buzz with new things and felt confused, drained, and fuzzy all week. I’m glad for the opportunity, but I can tell it will definitely challenge me. I’ve only been there for just over 2 months and it feels as though I’ve been working there forever and am now learning something new. The work culture there is great. Even though it’s a much more corporate environment than what I’m used to, my coworkers are super helpful. It feels more communal and friendly than my last job, which was about as laid back as you could get.

There were many other things I wanted to write about in this post, but now they all feel like things that can go in their own – mostly because I need to develop my thoughts on them more. I don’t schedule out posts nor do I have drafts. I’m always just sorta winging it with this because I never wanted to be too serious with it.

So tonight will be spent watching new season anime I need to catch up on and maybe playing more Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Last night the hubs and I played the first major dungeon of the game, but it wasn’t too terribly hard. Considering the challenges in it though, I have a feeling this is just a teaser to many more that will be infinitely more difficult. Yikes.

Snow day

The alarm went off and instead of snoozing I knew I’d either have to scrape a little snow off my car (might as well get up now so I have time to do it) or I’d get to go back to sleep. I walked downstairs to get a street view. Nope. Not happening. It was so dark out with so much snow blowing it looked like it was still 3 am out there. I crawled back into bed with my phone and no sooner than I pulled up my boss’s contact info, I got a text from him not to bother coming in today. Back to sleep for another two hours. Bliss.

Got up again. Z was already awake and fed the cats. He’s working from home today and able to catch up on a lot of work. He said today would be a good day to play Zelda, but he’s better off doing what work he can at home. His new job inundates him every single day and he needs help getting it all done. Peace and quiet at home for him to get things organized will greatly help. I make a hot breakfast and play Animal Crossing Pocket Camp.

snow day

Candles lit, heat blasting, mugs of hot tea, my wool blanket and video games. That is the extent of today’s agenda. I’ve heard the plows go by 5 times already. The wind is so strong now it blows all the snow back onto the the street in minutes. We were only supposed to get 4 or 5 inches of snow max, but it seems like we may get more. Note to self: double layer clothing tomorrow – it’ll be annoyingly cold.

tuesday

Tuesday: Everlane black long sleeve, Limi Feu sweater (gift from Z for xmas), Yohji pants. I put up different curtains before the holidays and while they’ve given the living room a nice color lift, they’re not doing my outfit photos any favors. I may have to find a different area of the house to do them until the daylight savings changes and I get more natural light again. wednesday

Wednesday: Banana Republic button down and grey cashmere sweater (gift from mom for xmas), Rachel Comey Lure Pant.

The Limi Feu sweater, BR sweater and RC pants are all new and (aside from one item currently on it’s way) the last items I bought in 2017. I don’t plan on buying any clothes for quite a while. I don’t really plan on buying much of anything for a long time.

I was shocked when I got the Limi Feu sweater, considering how expensive it was. I have some used designer clothes on my Amazon wishlist – I found through Japanese discounters – they aren’t on Amazon. I put them there for my reference more than anything else. The sweater is wool and linen and kept me quite warm on Tuesday when I was back in a freezing cold office. The heat was off over the holidays. The BR sweater is also very warm, but the V on it is so low my neck and chest were getting cold! The RC Lure Pant was a gift to myself. They went on sale, twice, and I jumped at the second time the price lowered. They are very high waisted (almost at my bra when I sit down) and low crotched and baggy and extremely comfortable. They look like worker pants in a way and I want to pair them now with my 45rpm clothes. They are very long as well, but I prefer the dorky look of cuffing them up high versus getting them hemmed. I’ll be wearing them a lot this winter along with the Sacai pants.

Upping my workout routine and tracking my reps again with what few exercises I can do while in the boot. My pull-ups are atrocious so I’m focusing on doing more of those. Started on December 30th and when January 1st rolled around my arms were cursing me, but I forced myself to work out. Now my core muscles are cranky with me. I need to look up some more stretching exercises to do post work out.

Exhaustion and Star Wars

This week I’ve felt like sleep is something other people do and I only have the scant privilege of experiencing on occasion.

tuesday

Tuesday: Everlane sweater and Sacai Luck pants.

wednesday

Wednesday: Banana Republic top and Yohji Yamamoto pants.

thursday

Thursday: Everlane top and Brass Clothing pants.

friday

Fri-yay: J Crew top and Grana jeans while drinking my favorite cocktail.

First and foremost, the cocktail in today’s photo:

Blackout Manhattan: 1 oz Rye, 1 oz Pims, 1 oz Averna – dashes of orange and walnut bitters with a dirty cherry.

I’ve made many variations of this drink. Today I used my husband’s bourbon because I’m out of Rye whisky. The “dirty cherry” is just a Bada Bing cherry, which you can get in a jar from the grocery store. It’s not one of those disgusting Maraschino cherries that taste like plastic. These are real cherries brined in syrup. Orange bitters are easy to find at most liquor stores and even some grocery stores, walnut bitters can easily be found on Amazon, which is where I got mine.

Also, I want to note that two blogs I follow had amazing posts this week:

Work from Home Wardrobe – Navel gazes and I found myself nodding: It’s as issue that aging women all deal with but rarely talk about. I want to hear from more women about this. This also had me thinking: what the hell does “aging gracefully” even mean? Discuss.

Dr It Girl  – The misogyny of minimalism – I was fist pumping about this. It’s SO TRUE.

This week I’ve feel pulled in twenty different directions. Finish shopping for the holidays, get house prepped for 2 weeks of guests, social engagements, work being… WORK and then some…

Wednesday night after dinner I was driving around to stores for a few things thinking the crowds wouldn’t be bad. Wow was I wrong. Anyway, I was standing in line at Macy’s to get a few gifts and a couple near me were also buying gifts and the woman asked if I found really soft PJs because she saw me looking in the same stacks they were. Then she and her husband were trying to figure out if they bought enough just to use a 15% off coupon and realized they didn’t so she got upset and said that holiday shopping was nothing but a racket to make people buy more junk. I smiled at that and enjoyed their bantering on the subject. She was overjoyed one minute at finding a nice present for her daughter but then cursing holiday shopping the next minute. Holiday shopping really brings out extremes in people.

Last night the hubs and I met up with a group of friends to go see Star Wars. Non-spoiler-very-generic-review: it was good, but I felt it didn’t throw the emotional punches it could have to make it great. The dialogue had me wondering if they got Lucas to write parts of it (that’s a sarcastic way of saying it felt very stilted). There was a lot of comedy in it as well that felt a little out of place – like it was trying to be a Marvel movie. In general I did enjoy it a lot and was glad I got to see it opening night. I know there are lots of people who hate movie crowds and such, but some movies really are better when you experience them with a large crowd of like-minded fans who all “AHHHHHH” and “Awwwww” and gasp and cheer at the same time. Mark Hamil does a lot of voice-over work and is famously known for his Joker voice he’s done for the Batman cartoon series for so long ( and all the video games – Arkham Asylum, etc..) so when I first heard him on screen all I could think is: the Joker is a Jedi! It took me a while to adjust and hear him as Luke Skywalker instead of waiting for a cackling laugh a la Joker style.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat

So I didn’t mean to go silent for two weeks, but I ended up being insanely busy. And when I wasn’t busy I was relishing in the few moments I had to do nothing. I did take outfit photos and looking at two weeks worth of them was really eye opening. I wear the same stuff over and over. I always knew that, but seeing it in photos really drove home the face that I don’t have a huge wardrobe at all. That’s not a bad thing. It’s simply an observation.

Mondays for the past 3 weeks. Latest photo taken today. I won’t bother writing what the items are that I wore because all of it has been worn before with one exception that I’ll get to in a bit:

Tuesdays:

Wednesdays: This is where I wear something NEW. Last Wednesday I wore a new pair of pants I got in the mail (second photo below). They are from Sacai Luck 2014 runway (I think) and fully lined solid wool beauties. Yes, the liner comes up to a funky drawstring above the waist button. It’s quirky and I like it and these pants are insanely warm and comfortable. I will be living in them this winter.

Thursdays: Oh look, both Thursdays I wore the Sacai Luck pants again. I meant it when I said I’d live in them.

Fridays:

I really do wear navy and black 90% of the time, don’t I?

Seeing these outfits like this makes me realize this blog might be pretty boring to look at for outfit photos since I tend to wear the same thing over and over.

In between these weeks have been two weekends. The first was an insane marathon of bathroom painting hell. The paint in our main bathroom was chipping and I tried sanding it off while I was unemployed, but just made a splotchy mess. It was going to take a LOT more work. I got maybe 25% of the walls cleared and then gave up. Since my relatives will be staying with us for the Christmas holiday we realized we really need to get that bathroom in shape. Saturday we scraped and sanded the rest of the walls. It took all day. The husband and I took shifts scraping and sanding while the other recovered from arms turning into jello. Sunday we sanded more (mostly to even out the spackling we’d done at 9 pm the night before) and then painted… and then cleaned. And finally at 7 pm Sunday night the bathroom was normal again and our arms had fallen off and we were exhausted and crying that we needed a weekend from our weekend. Monday I was a wreck. I didn’t bother doing my usual exercising again until Wednesday and even then my arms were screaming at me: why do you hate us! as I did chin ups.

But now at least the bathroom looks nice. Because the tile in there is awful 1950s salmon with black trim we kept the walls totally white. The grout is white in the tile so it looks somewhat decent that way. We also got a new shower head, light fixture and shower curtains. Everything is white except that awful tile and it looks nice and bright, but I feel like a vampire being blasted by the sun each morning when I get ready for work.

This past weekend I did nothing. Both days I spent lounging on the sofa playing games or catching up on anime. It snowed Saturday and neither the hubs nor I felt like doing anything and relished a well-earned break. We did get a Christmas tree last Friday night and decorated it Saturday while it snowed, but that was the extent of our sloth-like weekend of relaxation.

Catching up

outfit

Top: Everlane. Pants: Uniqulo. House Slippers: Muji.

I wasn’t certain if I was going out this day or not. I think this was last Thursday. I ended up staying home and doing more cleaning. I’m wearing a new shirt here, the square mock neck from Everlane. The cotton is very soft and the shirt is rather cropped, but not too bad. I like how open the sleeves are. It’ll be a decent layering piece in cooler weather. I also got the slim long-sleeve crew in black, but probably won’t wear that for a while since the weather is getting hot again, but that’ll be another decent layering piece.

Most blogs I follow have been talking about the Everlane jeans and they were a complete non-event for me. The styles and colors were highly predictable and boring. I’m not in the market for fitted jeans like that anymore, so I’ve zero interest in them. Also, I’m not overly impressed with their new Goweave easy pant. Take a look at the photo above. The pants I’m wearing here look nearly identical to the ones Everlane just put out. These are from Uniqlo and they hardly wrinkle at all and were a third of the cost for the Everlane pant. I took this photo after I’d been running around the house, crawling on the floor to pick up things and they don’t look overly wrinkled at all. They also have a hidden elastic waist and faux zipper panel that looks a little more polished than the Everlane ones, IMO.

I get a strange feeling that Everlane is just churning out stuff to churn it out anymore and by doing so I feel like they are turning into a pseudo-fast-fashion type of place as a result. Their catalog has grown enormous over the past two years. They aren’t a bad company at all, but I feel like they’ve gotten a bit too big for their britches and are now trying to compete more with the fast fashion industry instead of stand above it. I’d prefer to buy stuff from them over most fast fashion places, but anymore I’m just not impressed by their predictable styles. I feel like I’m browsing a Banana Republic or J Crew catalog, but without as many patterns.

outfit2

Shirt and pants: Fantasy Linen. Shoes: Lems Nine2five. Hat: old – from a shop in the Ahwahnee Lodge in Yosemite Nat’l Park.

This was Saturday and the hubs and I went to a nearby Ren Faire. I was sweating up a storm and I was wearing light clothes. The people in period costumes with metal (the knights) and leathers must’ve been stifling! I’m glad I wore loose, airy clothes. We both got some sun. Mine turned more into a tan and the husband is now peeling because he burned a bit. Looking at this photo – I feel like I’m looking at someone about to go work in a rice paddy.

outfit3

Shirt: Banana Republic. Pants: Uniqlo. Shoes: Lems Nine2five.

I wore this to an interview. Risky I know because the shirt is sleeveless, but the office was connected to a warehouse. It’s hard to tell what’s ok with “business casual” though for offices. Some think business casual is actually a suit without the jacket and others allow jeans. The interview went very well though. It’s promising that I’m getting interviews so soon.

The weather is heating up again – ugh. I’m ready for real autumn weather. I was very disheartened to see it might creep up to 90F for my birthday next week. I hate hot weather.
